Utah Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra

New Members:

Auditions for the 2011-2012 season will be held in the orchestra room at Canyon View Junior High School (655 E. 950 N. Orem, UT) on Saturday September 10, 2011 from 8 - 11 AM. Auditions are 5-7 minutes long and are determined on a “first-come, first-served” basis. A space will be available for students to warm up prior to their audition. Students should play without accompaniment. A $10 audition fee is due at the audition.

For those unable to attend the Saturday auditions, make-up auditions may be scheduled at uvyso1@gmail.com. Please tell us who you are, how old you are, and what instrument you play.

Notification of acceptance will be sent by e-mail and U.S. mail by Wednesday, September 14th.

Rehearsals begin Tuesday, September 20.

Returning Members:

No audition is required for returning members of the Youth Symphony or Philharmonia who send in tuition and preregister by August 20, 2011. Request a preregistration form at uvyso1@gmail.com.

Youth Symphony members who wish to "audition up" to Phil should preregister and then audition with new members on September 10.

New members may be accepted to the organization mid-season if space is available. Each group has a maximum enrollment to ensure proper musical balance and provide each student with personalized attention.

Mid-Season Auditions will be held just before Thanksgiving by appointment. Click here to request a mid-season audition.

Other auditions may be held at other times as needed to maintain full instrumentation but will be arranged on a per-case basis and only on the approval of all UVYSO conductors.

Youth Symphony:

Woodwinds and Brass:

· All Major Scales: Using the circle of 5ths or 4ths; 2 Octaves where possible.

· Excerpt: 2 Minutes (or less) - Unaccompanied solo/etude; selection from school music is acceptable; memorization is not required.

Strings:

· 2 Scales: 2 or 3 Octaves, your choice of key, as fast as you can without mistakes. (Slur in groups of 2, 3, or 4)

· Excerpt: 2 Minutes (or less) - Unaccompanied; should demonstrate ability in positions; memorization is not required.

Percussion:
Bring your own sticks/mallets. Percussion instruments will be provided.

· Snare: Etude of your choice. Demonstrate mastery of basic Snare Rudiments.
· Mallets: Major Scales:Using the circle of 5ths or 4ths.

· Timpani: Demonstrate your ability to tune drums to specified pitches.

Philharmonia:

Woodwinds and Brass:

· Major Scales: Using the circle of 5ths or 4ths; 2 Octaves where possible.

· Chromatic Scale: 2 Octaves, beginning on Concert B-flat.

· Excerpt: 2 Minutes (or less) - Unaccompanied solo/etude; memorization is not required.

Strings:

· Two 3 Octave Scales: Your choice of key, as fast as you can without mistakes.

· Excerpt: 2 Minutes (or less) - Unaccompanied; should demonstrate ability in positions; memorization is not required.

Percussion:
Bring your own sticks/mallets. Percussion instruments will be provided.
