Audition Requirements:
 2008/2009 Season

Auditions for the 2008/2009 Season will be held at Canyon View Junior High School (655 E 950 N, Orem UT),
Saturday, Sept. 6 (see details below) from 8:00 to 11:00 am.
Make-up Auditions will be held Monday, September 8 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.

Applicants are auditioned on a "first-come-first-served" basis.
Auditions should take 5 to 7 minutes each.

There is a $10 audition fee, payable at the time of audition.

Returning members of the Utah Valley Youth Symphony Organization may reapply by returning the pre-registration form.  Don't miss the Aug. 10 deadline!
Sinfonia members who feel they are ready to move up to the Philharmonia should pre-register and then audition (see schedule above).

 Audition Requirements  - String Sinfonia
  • 1 or 2 Scales: Your most advanced
  • Song: Demonstrate your ability
  • Sight-Reading: We'll provide a short selection

 Audition Requirements - Youth Symphony

Woodwinds and Brass:

  • All Major Scales: Using the circle of 5ths or 4ths; 2 Octaves where possible
  • Excerpt: 2 Minutes (or less) - Unaccompanied solo/etude; selection from school music is acceptable; memorization is not required

Strings:

  • Major Scale: 2 or 3 Octaves, your choice of key, as fast as you can without mistakes
  • Minor Scale: 2 or 3 Octaves, your choice of key, as fast as you can without mistakes
  • Excerpt: 2 Minutes (or less) - Unaccompanied; should demonstrate ability in positions; memorization is not required

Percussion:

Bring your own sticks/mallets. Percussion instruments will be provided.
  • Snare etude/rudiments
  • Mallets: perform your most advanced scales
  • Timpani excerpt

 Audition Requirements - Philharmonia

Woodwinds and Brass:

  • All Major Scales: Using the circle of 5ths or 4ths; 2 Octaves where possible
  • Chromatic Scale: 2 Octaves beginning on Concert B-flat
  • Excerpt: 2 Minutes (or less) - Unaccompanied solo/etude; selection from school music is acceptable; memorization is not required

Strings:

  • Major Scale: 3 Octaves, your choice of key, as fast as you can without mistakes
  • Minor Scale: 3 Octaves, your choice of key, as fast as you can without mistakes
  • 1 Chromatic Scale: 2-Octaves, beginning on your lowest open string
  • Excerpt: 2 Minutes (or less) - Unaccompanied; must demonstrate ability in positions; memorization is not required

Percussion:

Bring your own sticks/mallets. Percussion instruments will be provided.
  • Snare etude/rudiments
  • Mallets: perform your most advanced scales
  • Timpani excerpt
